Bloom Alert: Belle’S Brook

Lovely flowers in a wide variety of colors and forms bloom throughout summer along Belle’s Brook. Many were recently planted during the renovation of the Plant Family Collection and the completion of the Water Conservation Project and are blooming for the first time. Be sure to visit and look for some of these beautiful blooms.

Leopard Plant
Ligularia ‘The Rocket’

An aster family species with unusual flower spikes, leopard plant is found along streams and ponds in the wild, as it needs to grow near a body of water.

Culver’s Root
Veronicastrum virginicum

This native prairie plant has tiny white, tube-shaped flowers that start to bloom first at the bottom of the long flower spikes and then work their way up.

Drumstick Allium
Allium sphaerocephalon

A summer-blooming bulb, this European native has egg-shaped flower clusters that start out green and become burgundy.

Red Bistort
Periscaria amplexicaulis

A member of the buckwheat family, red bistort has deep pink flower spikes which remain in bloom through late summer.

Filipendula rubra

The spectacular, fuzzy pink flowers of this native prairie plant sit atop tall stems, rising above surrounding plants. They have a light, lilac-like fragrance.
