When Is Fathers Day In Uk 2020 – 2025?
Mat Noor

Father’s Day always takes place in June, however, not always on the same day, which can make it tricky to keep track of the exact date. It’s certainly a date you don’t want to forget; yet unless you’re willing to populate your diary for all future dates, it can be hard to remember.

When is Father’s Day and why do we celebrate it?

In the United Kingdom, Father’s Day takes place on the third Sunday in June. According to one story, Father’s Day was originally initiated because of a woman named Grace Golden Clayton, who was from Fairmount in West Virginia.

As an orphan, Grace petitioned her local Methodist ministers to throw a church service to honor fathers in 1908. The tale states she was inspired by a tragic mining disaster that killed 362 local men including her own father; meaning more than 1000 children were left orphaned. Grace wanted to create an event that would allow her and all the other children to pay tribute to their late fathers.

Another story relates to the daughter of a civil war veteran, Sonora Smart Dodd. While listening to a Mother’s Day sermon, Sonora felt she needed to do something to celebrate dads too. She campaigned to her religious leaders, and in 1966, U.S President Lyndon B. Johnson elected that the third Sunday in June should be Father’s Day.

How we celebrate today

For many, Father’s Day is the perfect excuse to spoil one of the main men in your life. If you live further afield, you may want to book a flight back home for the weekend, while if you live at home, you may wish to make a special Father’s Day breakfast, lunch or dinner and invite the entire family around. You can also buy gifts, in the shape of hampers brimming with decadent delights, such as the Cheese and Ale trug available from Serenata Flowers, a bouquet of beautiful blooms, a plant if he fancies himself as a little of green-fingered connoisseur, or a helium balloon brandishing the words ‘Happy Father’s Day!’

If you’re unable to make the date, sending a gift is a great way to show your love and appreciation. There are a number of online sites that offer next day and even same day delivery. This includes a Sunday service, meaning your chosen gift will arrive on Father’s Day itself.
