World Sweetest Day
Wided Sanai

…it’s exactly what it sounds like. Sweetest Day is an unofficial holiday, celebrated every October since 1921, a day when people buy each other sweets and candy.

Wait… what?

How come we haven’t heard of this before?

There is a very good reason.

Sweetest Day, a celebration planned and started in the United States back in the first quarter of the 21st century, never really reached our rainier part of the world. A group of 12 candy salesmen – also called the Sweetest Day Committee – came up with the idea of another Valentine’s Day. But you know, without the love.

In Cleveland, Ohio, on the very first Sweetest Day ever (10th October 1921), the Committee went around the city and gave away almost 20,000 boxes of sweets and candy to the poor and underprivileged. By doing so, they hoped to evoke feelings of compassion in US citizens, and have it potentially flare into a full-blown holiday. It is speculated (and rightly so) that the Committee wanted to do little but increase their sales. You know, let us turn this regular old day another holiday when people will buy thousands and thousands of dollars worth of candy and sweets for their loved ones…

AND THEY SUCCEEDED!

We are so glad that this caught on the US, and is definitely seeing a rebirth in Europe in the past couple of years.

Not only will you get to buy candy for others come this October 21, but you will also be able to indulge, freely and without restraint, in all the chocolate and marzipan and hazelnut and vanilla, your heart desires. Never mind the calories – it’s a holiday!

(Now, all kidding aside, do bear in mind that chocolate is a high-caloric food, and overindulging will cause you to gain fat over time).

Now we’ve gotten the disclaimer out of the way, let’s see how we can make this year’s Sweetest Day special.

First of all, the crew at Serenata Flowers suggests you stock up on some sweets. Naturally. To help you with this, we happen to have an amazing choice of chocolates on offer. For example, there’s this mouth-watering, happiness-inducing, glorious chocolate hamper called, well, the Chocolate Hamper. If you want to increase the level of sweetness as well as your blood sugar levels, try this one – Congratulations Chocolate Hamper (you don’t have to congratulate anyone on anything, of course. Or, you know, you can congratulate yourself for being alive on this very fine October day, and reward yourself with the tastiest chocolates this side of the Atlantic).

Second, if you’re that uncreative, get yourself some more candy. Now, this doesn’t differ from advice #1 at all but just goes to show that with a little bit of imagination you can think of something better to do, such as…

…visit a famous ice-cream or cake shop in your city that you haven’t yet had a chance to visit. Or, you can have them deliver it… to you.

No, wait – this just might be low blood sugar talking.

Some other activities may include learning about candy, sweets, and chocolate, learn how it’s made, where it’s made, and how it reaches our shelves.

You can also decide to completely ignore the hustle and bustle around the Sweetest Day and just go about your business as usual. However, although far from a wrong, spending your Sweetest Day like this might take away the opportunity for you to learn or try something new. This is actually the point of most of these unofficial holidays. You know, we have enough days in a year. right? 365. If the 365 are spent the same – work, house, work – or perhaps with some subtle variations that you then realize you’ve been doing for years on end – life might just prove to be a little monotonous. Which is why people invent these things. Hey, there’s nothing that special to do or celebrate between September and Halloween? Let’s make a holiday up!

Granted, this was not the case with Sweetest Day, which was originally designed as a marketing effort to try and sell more candy. However, it can still be used as a chance to try something new, grow as a person, or just have some plain old fun.

Fifth… Is it fifth? Anyway. Not to bombard you with our products, Hipper is going to show you some more chocolaty goodies that we have in store for you – why, when else can we put all our finest works of art on display like this?

Here are three amazing products for you to choose from: ranging from less costly (and just a tad less brilliant) to more expensive. First off, seduce yourself and everyone around you with this amazing Chocolate Temptations box. Did you know that all of our boxes and hampers were hand-picked and designed by our very own staff members? So, you know, there is nothing here for you that we ourselves wouldn’t eat. Nay, devour. After you seduce and woo and tempt yourselves with some sinfully wonderful chocolate, we hit you with a Definitive Chocolate Hamper. Yup, that’s the name – and as you’ll be able to tell very soon, it really is the definitive chocolate experience. Simply wonderful. Now, how can there be anything above that which is Definitive? Right? There is. We bring to you (let us wait for the rolling sound of drums) the Indulgence Chocolate Hamper. One of our colleagues, a well-known black humor connoisseur, said that if he ever had to go – this may very well be the best way.

Our team looks forward to this year’s Sweetest Day, and hopes you will too! Enjoy it, enjoy your sweets and candies, and spend this yet another wonderful day with your loved ones. If you want to send us a suggestion, ask us a question, or simply comment on this post – by all means, go right ahead!
